Readers Journal- Biography

#7                                        Readers Journal                               10/10/11                                                                                                                                     Dear Mrs.Zrihen,                                                                                              I just finished a biography book called John F Kennedy. By Howard S. Kaplan. This story told me about John F Kennedy’s life. One quote that really stood out to me was:                                                                                                                                                  “A man may die, nations may raise and fall, but an idea lives on.” By John F Kennedy                                                                                                                                                                                        I picked this quote because I thought it was fascinating. This quote is important to the text because it tells the readers what he was thinking and what was one of his famous quotes. I used many strategies before, during and after I read this book. One strategy that I used before I read this book was to skim and scan though the book to check if there was any text features in this book. Another strategy that I used before reading this book was to create a purpose for reading this book. The purpose I read this book was for my readers’ journal. One strategy that I used while I was reading this book was to visualize the most intense and exciting parts of this book. Another strategy that I used while I was reading this book was to make text to self-comparisons. One strategy that I used after I read this book was to summarize the book in to a report (RJ). Another strategy that I used after I read this book was to make inferences about John F Kennedy.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 There were many non- fiction elements in this book that I found. The main idea of this book is what happened in John F Kennedy’s life and after his life. I learned that he was ill almost all the time when he was little. I also learned that he was a very disobedient child and not that good in school. The essential message of this book is John F Kennedy’s life. One cause and effect that I found in this book I that John F Kennedy ran for president made speeches about what he was going to do if he was president and then he became president.                                                                                                                                                                                                   Some text features that I found in this book were the timeline behind the book, pictures, and captions underneath the pictures.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          The pattern of organization of this book is chronological order because everything was in order. The author’s purpose for writing this book was to inform. The author’s perspective is subjective because the author does not give any of her opinions, or beliefs. The author’s point of view was in third person.                                                                                                                                               The only figurative language I could find in this book was similes and a few metaphors. I used the internet and books about John F Kennedy to check the accuracy of this book. I could relate John F Kennedy to Martin Luther King Jr in some ways because they both were trying to get equality. I can relate this book to myself because sometimes I am very disobedient.  I can relate this book to the world because the world is very discriminating. I can compare John F Kennedy to his brother because his brother was some times ill. I can contrast   from his brother because his brother was well behaved and was good in school.                                                                                                                                                                                    Over all this was an amazing book. This book was very inspiring. I would rate this book a nine out of ten because is very good but sometime it talked about things that wasn’t related to John F Kennedy. I recommend this book to all children because it was very educational.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      Sincerely,                                                                                                   Roxanne Fine

  2. Dear Erika, Thanks, I rated this book a nine out of ten because sometimes the book would go off topic and talk about something else. An interesting fact that i learned was that he was not good in school and was a slob. One thing that i did not know was that he was a really sick child. Thanks again From Roxanne Fine 702
